Tafsir of An-Nahl 16:72

{From among yourselves} Meaning: from your own species. It is also said: It refers to the creation of Eve from the rib of Adam.

{And grandchildren (ḥafada)} The plural of ḥāfid, which is one who yaḥfidu—that is, one who hastens in obedience and service. From this is the saying of the devout: "To You we strive and hasten (naḥfidu)." And the poet said: The maidservants hasten among them, and they have surrendered The reins of the camels into their palms.

There is disagreement regarding them:

• It is said: They are the sons-in-law (husbands of the daughters).
• It is said: They are the children’s children.
• It is said: They are the woman’s children from a previous husband.
• It is said: The meaning is "He has made for you ḥafada," meaning servants who hasten in your interests and assist you.
• It is possible that ḥafada refers to the sons themselves, as in His saying: {An intoxicant and a good provision} (An-Naḥl: 67). It is as if it were said: "He has made for you from them children who are sons and who are ḥāfidūn (hastening servants)," meaning they combine both qualities.

{From the good things} He means some of them, because all good things are in Paradise, and the good things of this world are merely a sample of them.

{Do they then believe in falsehood?} This refers to what they believe regarding the benefit of idols, their blessings, and their intercession. It is nothing but a false delusion they have reached without proof or indication. They have no faith except in this, as if it were something known and certain.

As for the manifest, witnessed blessing of God—in which there is no doubt for anyone possessing intellect and discernment—they are disbelievers in it, denying it just as one denies an impossibility that the mind cannot conceive.

It is also said: "Falsehood" refers to what Satan entices them with, such as the prohibition of the Baḥīra and the Sā'iba and others, while "the blessing of God" refers to what He has made lawful for them.

{And they worship instead of God that which does not possess for them any provision from the heavens and the earth, nor are they able [to do so].}
