Tafsir of An-Nahl 16:80

{From your houses} Those which you inhabit, whether made of stone, mud-brick, tents, or otherwise.

{And He made for you, of the houses} Meaning: dwellings. Sakan (dwelling) is a verbal noun used in the sense of a passive participle (maskūn); it is that which one finds tranquility in and retreats to, whether it be a house or a companion.

{Tents} These are domes and structures made of leather and hides.

{Which you find light} You perceive them as light to carry when setting them up, taking them down, or transporting them.

{On the day of your departure and the day of your settlement} Meaning: on the day you travel, their weight and burden are light for you; and on the day you descend and settle in a place, setting them up is not burdensome for you. Alternatively, they are light for you at all times of travel and residence, with the word "day" here meaning "time."

{And [from their wool, fur, and hair] goods} Things from which you derive benefit.

{For a time} Until you have fulfilled your needs from them, or until they wear out and perish, or until you die.

Note: It is recited as "yawma ẓa‘nikum" with a sukun (on the ẓā’).

{And Allah has made for you, from what He has created, shadows, and He has made for you from the mountains, shelters, and He has made for you garments to protect you from the heat and garments to protect you from your [mutual] violence. Thus does He complete His favor upon you that you might submit [to Him].}
