An-Naḥl: 81
{And Allah has made for you, from what He has created, shelters (aknan)}
The plural of kinn, which is that in which one finds shelter, such as houses carved into mountains, caves, and caverns.
{And [He has made for you] garments (sarābīl)}
These are shirts and clothing made of wool, linen, cotton, and others.
{That protect you from the heat}
He did not mention the cold because protection from the heat was more important to them; they rarely concerned themselves with the cold, as it was slight and tolerable. It is also said: that which protects from the heat also protects from the cold, so the mention of heat implies the cold.
{And garments that protect you from your violence (ba’sikum)}
He means coats of mail and breastplates. The term sirbāl (garment) is general and applies to everything, whether made of iron or otherwise.
{So that you may submit (tuslimūn)}
Meaning: that you may contemplate His overflowing blessings, believe in Him, and submit to Him.
It is also recited as taslamūn (from salāma—safety): meaning that you may be grateful and thus be saved (taslamūn) from the punishment. Or, that your hearts may be saved from polytheism. It is also said: that you may be saved from wounds by wearing armor.
{But if they turn away, then your duty is only clear notification. They recognize the favor of Allah, then they deny it. And most of them are the disbelievers.}
