Surah Al-Isra 17:102

ﲭ ﲮ ﲯ ﲰ ﲱ ﲲ ﲳ ﲴ ﲵ ﲶ ﲷ ﲸ ﲹ ﲺ ﲻ

[Moses] said, "You have already known that none has sent down these [signs] except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as evidence, and indeed I think, O Pharaoh, that you are destroyed."

Al-Isra: 102

{He said: "You have surely known..."} O Pharaoh, {that none has sent these} signs {down except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as} {clear evidences}—manifest and plain. Yet, you are obstinate and arrogant. This is similar to the verse: "And they denied them, while their souls were convinced of them, out of injustice and arrogance" (An-Naml: 14).

It is also recited as ‘ulimtu (in the passive voice), meaning: I am not bewitched as you have described me; rather, I am certain of the truth of the matter, and that the One who sent these signs is the Lord of the heavens and the earth.

{...and indeed, I think you, O Pharaoh, to be destroyed.} He countered his conjecture with his own. It is as if he said: If you think I am bewitched, I think you are mathburan (destroyed/ruined). My conjecture is more accurate than yours because it has a manifest proof: your denial of what you know to be true and your stubbornness against the signs of God after they have become clear. As for your conjecture, it is pure falsehood; for your statement—while you know the truth of my affair—that "I think you are bewitched" is the statement of a liar.

Al-Farra’ said: Mathburan means turned away from goodness, with your heart sealed. It comes from the saying: "What thabara (prevented/turned) you from this?" meaning: What stopped you and turned you away? Ubayy ibn Ka’b recited it as: "Wa-inna ikhaluka ya Fir’awnu lamathburan" (Indeed, I think you, O Pharaoh, to be destroyed), using the lightened inna and the lam of differentiation.

{So he intended to unsettle them from the land...} Pharaoh intended to unsettle Moses and his people from the land of Egypt and drive them out, or to banish them from the face of the earth through killing and extermination. But his plot recoiled upon him, as God provoked him by drowning him along with his Copts.

{...so We said to the Children of Israel after him, "Dwell in the land..."} The land from which Pharaoh intended to unsettle you.

{...and when the promise of the Hereafter comes, We will bring you forth in a gathering.} Meaning the establishment of the Hour. We will bring you and them together, mixed. Then He will judge between you and distinguish between your righteous and your wretched. Al-Lafif refers to groups from various tribes.

{And with the truth We have sent it down, and with the truth it has descended. And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.}
