Tafsir of Al-Isra 17:25

{What is in your souls} That is, what is in your inner thoughts regarding the intention of righteousness toward your parents and the belief in the reverence that is due to them.

{If you are righteous} Meaning: If you intend righteousness and piety, then a lapse occurs on your part during a state of anger, or when the chest is constricted—things from which no human is free—or if, due to the zeal of Islam, a minor offense occurs that leads to harming them, and then you turn back to Allah and seek His forgiveness for it, then indeed Allah is Forgiving.

{To the oft-returning} Meaning: To those who frequently repent.

• Sa’id ibn Jubayr said: It refers to a hasty word that escapes a man toward his father, while he intends nothing but good.
• Sa’id ibn al-Musayyib said: The awwab (oft-returning) is the man who, whenever he commits a sin, hastens to repent.

It is permissible for this to be general for everyone from whom a transgression has occurred and who then repented from it. The one who transgresses against his parents and then repents from his transgression is included under this, due to its occurrence immediately following [the mention of parents].

{And give the relative his right, and the needy, and the wayfarer. And do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.}
