Verse range: 17:39
{ ذالك } This is a reference to what preceded it, from His saying: { Do not set up any other god with Allah } (Al-Isra: 22) up to this point. He called it "wisdom" because it is a perfected discourse, into which no corruption can enter in any way.
Ibn Abbas said: These eighteen verses were on the Tablets of Moses. The first of them is: "Do not set up any other god with Allah." Allah the Exalted said: { And We wrote for him on the Tablets, from everything, an admonition } (Al-A'raf: 145). These are ten verses in the Torah. Allah made their beginning and their end the prohibition of shirk (polytheism), because Tawhid (monotheism) is the head of all wisdom and its foundation. Whoever lacks it, his wisdom and knowledge will not benefit him, even if he surpasses the wise in them and his head reaches the heavens. The books of philosophy did not avail the philosophers, for they are more astray from the religion of Allah than cattle.
{ Then, has your Lord chosen you for sons, and taken for Himself females from among the angels? Indeed, you are saying a grave saying. }
