Al-Kahf: 55
{And what prevented the people...}
The first an (in an ta'tiyahum) is in the accusative case (nasb), and the second is in the nominative case (raf'). Before it, there is an omitted genitive construction (mudaf), the estimation of which is: "And what prevented the people" from faith and seeking forgiveness "except" the waiting for "the precedent of the ancients to come upon them"—which is destruction—"or" the waiting for "the punishment to come upon them" face-to-face (qubulan), meaning: visibly.
It has also been recited as:
- Qubulan: meaning "types" or "kinds," the plural of qabil.
- Qabalan: with two fathas, meaning "in the future" (mustaqbalan).
Al-Kahf: 56
{And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. But those who disbelieve dispute with falsehood to invalidate the truth thereby, and they have taken My signs and that of which they are warned in mockery.}
