And your Lord is the Forgiving, full of mercy. If He were to impose blame upon them for what they earned, He would have hastened for them the punishment. Rather, for them is an appointment from which they will never find an escape.

Al-Kahf: 58

{And your Lord is the Forgiving, Possessor of Mercy} He is the One whose forgiveness is profound, and the One described by mercy. He then provided evidence for this by His forbearance in not immediately punishing the people of Mecca without respite, despite their excessive hostility toward the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).

{Rather, for them is an appointment} This refers to the Day of Badr.

{They will find no refuge besides Him} They will find no escape or shelter. It is said: "Wa'ala" (وأل) when one escapes, and "Wa'ala ilayhi" (وأل إليه) when one takes refuge in him.

{And those cities—We destroyed them when they committed wrong, and We set for their destruction an appointment.}
