Maryam: (10) He said, "My Lord, appoint for me..."

"Appoint for me a sign" Meaning: Appoint for me a sign by which I may know the occurrence of that which You have given me glad tidings of.

"He said, 'Your sign is that you shall not speak to the people for three nights, though you are sound.'" Meaning: You shall be unable to speak, though you are physically healthy, with sound limbs and a normal constitution, suffering from neither muteness nor a speech impediment.

Note on the duration: The mention of "nights" here, and "days" in [Surah] Al-Imran, indicates that the prohibition of speech lasted for three full days and their nights.

{Then he came out to his people from the sanctuary and signaled to them to glorify [Allah] morning and evening.}
