Tafsir of Maryam 19:29

{فأشارت إليه} Meaning: "He is the one who will answer you if you speak to him."

It is said: The one questioning Jesus was Zechariah (peace be upon him).

Al-Suddi narrated: When she pointed to him, they became angry and said, "Her mocking us is more severe to us than her adultery."

It is reported that he was nursing; when he heard this, he stopped nursing, turned his face toward them, leaned on his left side, and pointed with his index finger.

It is said: He spoke to them with these words, then did not speak again until he reached the age when children typically speak.

{كان} It is used to place the content of the sentence in an indefinite past time, applicable to both the near and distant past. Here, it is specifically for the near past, as indicated by the structure of the discourse and the fact that it is intended to express astonishment.

Another interpretation: {نكلم} is a narrative of a past state. Meaning: How has it ever been known before Jesus that a child in the cradle spoke to people in times past, such that we should speak to this one?

{قال إني عبد الله آتاني الكتاب وجعلني نبيا * وجعلني مباركا أين ما كنت وأوصاني بالصلاة والزكاة ما دمت حيا * وبرا بوالدتي ولم يجعلني جبارا شقيا * والسلام علي يوم ولدت ويوم أموت ويوم أبعث حيا}
