Maryam: 37

{The factions (al-aḥzāb) differed} Al-Kalbi says: They are the Jews and the Christians. Others say: They are the Christians, due to their division into three sects: Nestorian, Jacobite, and Melkite. Al-Hasan says: They are those who banded together against the prophets. When the story of Jesus was recounted to them, they differed regarding him.

{From the witnessing of a Great Day} This means:

  • From their witnessing the terror of the Reckoning and the recompense on the Day of Resurrection.
  • Or from the place of witnessing, which is the Gathering Place (al-mawqif).
  • Or from the time of witnessing.
  • Or from that day’s testimony against them, where the angels, the prophets, their own tongues, hands, and feet will testify against them regarding their disbelief and evil deeds.
  • Or from the place of the testimony or its time.
  • It is also said: It refers to what they said and testified regarding Jesus and his mother.

Maryam: 38–40

{How clearly they will hear and how clearly they will see on the Day they come to Us! But the wrongdoers are today in clear error. And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter is decided, while they are in heedlessness and do not believe. Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is on it, and to Us they will be returned.}
