Surah Maryam 19:53



ﱉ ﱊ ﱋ ﱌ ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ

And We gave him out of Our mercy his brother Aaron as a prophet.

Maryam: 53

{And We bestowed upon him out of Our mercy} Meaning: Because of Our mercy toward him and Our compassion for him, We bestowed upon him Aaron. Or, it means "some of Our mercy," as in the verse: {And We bestowed upon them out of Our mercy}.

In this interpretation, {his brother} is an appositive (badal), and {Aaron} is an explanatory noun (ʿaṭf bayān), similar to your saying: "I saw a man, your brother, Zayd."

Aaron was older than Moses, so the "bestowal" refers to his support and assistance. This is reported from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him).

{And mention in the Book, Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet. And he used to enjoin upon his people prayer and zakah, and he was to his Lord pleasing.}
