ﱨ ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ

And mention in the Book, Idrees. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.

Maryam: (56) And mention in the Book...

It is said: He was named Idris because of his frequent study (dirāsa) of the Book of Allah, the Almighty. His name was Enoch.

This is incorrect; for if it were an af‘īl form derived from al-dars (study), it would possess only one cause for diptote declension (man‘ min al-ṣarf), which is proper noun status (‘alamiyya). Thus, it would be fully declinable (munṣarif). Its indeclinability is proof of its non-Arabic origin (‘ujma).

Likewise, Iblīs is non-Arabic; it is not from al-iblās (despair) as they claim. Nor is Ya‘qūb from al-‘aqb (the heel), nor is Isrā’īl from isrā’il as Ibn al-Sikkīt claimed. Whoever does not verify or train in the craft [of linguistics] produces many such errors. It is possible that the meaning of "Idris" in that [original] language is close to that [meaning], so the narrator assumed it was derived from al-dars.

"A high station": The nobility of prophethood and proximity to Allah. Allah revealed thirty scrolls to him. He was the first to write with a pen, the first to study the science of the stars and arithmetic, and the first to sew garments and wear them; before him, they wore skins.

From Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him), in a marfū‘ narration: "He was raised to the fourth heaven."

From Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with them): "To the sixth heaven."

From al-Ḥasan (may Allah be pleased with him): "To Paradise; there is nothing higher than Paradise."

From al-Nābigha al-Ja‘dī: When he recited poetry before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that ended with: Our glory and our radiance have reached the heavens, And we hope for a place above that.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "To where, O Abū Laylā?" He replied: "To Paradise."


(58) Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.
