Surah Maryam 19:65

ﱁ ﱂ ﱃ ﱄ ﱅ ﱆ ﱇ ﱈ ﱉ ﱊ ﱋ ﱌ ﱍ

Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them - so worship Him and have patience for His worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?"

Maryam: (65) The Lord of the heavens and the earth...

{The Lord of the heavens and the earth} This is an appositive (badal) for "your Lord." It is also permissible for it to be the predicate of an omitted subject—meaning: "He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth."

{So worship Him} This is like the saying: "And a woman of Khawlan said: 'Marry their young girl.'"

Based on this interpretation, it is permissible for {And your Lord is never forgetful} (Maryam: 64) to be the speech of the righteous, while what follows it is the speech of the Lord of Might.

If you ask: Why was {be patient} (iṣṭabir) not connected with ‘alā (upon), which is its usual preposition, as in the Almighty’s saying: {...and be patient upon them [the prayers]}?

I reply: Because worship has been placed in the position of an adversary (qarn). It is as if you were saying to a warrior: "Be patient for your adversary" (iṣṭabir li-qarnika), meaning: stand firm against him regarding the hardships he brings upon you. The intent is that worship brings upon you hardships and difficulties, so stand firm against them and do not weaken. Do not let your chest tighten due to the fallacies cast at you by the People of the Book, nor due to the withholding of revelation from you for a period, nor the gloating of the polytheists over you.

{Do you know of any namesake for Him?} Meaning: Nothing has ever been named "Allah" except for God. They used to call their idols "gods," and "al-‘Uzzā" a god. As for the name in which the alif and lām (the definite article) have replaced the hamzah (i.e., Allāh), it is exclusive to the True Worshipped One, and no one else shares in it.

It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with them both): "No one is named 'the Most Merciful' (al-Raḥmān) except Him."

Another perspective: Do you know of anyone named by His name in truth, rather than in falsehood? For naming in falsehood is, in its lack of validity, as if it were no naming at all.

It has been said: [The meaning of samīyan is] a likeness or a peer. That is: If it is established that there is no object of worship to whom servants should direct worship except Him alone, then there is no choice but to worship Him and be patient regarding its hardships and obligations.


{And the human says: "When I have died, will I be brought forth alive?" Does the human not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?}
