Maryam: (84) "So do not be in haste against them..."

"Do not be in haste against them" To be in haste against someone regarding something means to demand it from them quickly. It means: Do not be in haste for them to be destroyed and annihilated so that you and the Muslims may find rest from their evils, and the earth may be purified by cutting off their roots.

There is nothing between you and the destruction you seek for them except limited days and numbered breaths. In their swift passing, they are as if they were the very hour in which they are counted, if you were to count them. Similar to this is His saying: "So do not be in haste for them" (Al-Ahqaf: 35), and "On the day they see what they are promised, it will be as if they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day" (Al-Ahqaf: 35).

From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): Whenever he read this verse, he would weep and say: "The end of the count is the exit of your soul; the end of the count is the parting from your family; the end of the count is your entry into your grave."

From Ibn al-Sammak: He was in the presence of al-Ma'mun and recited this verse. He said: "If breaths are numbered and have no extension, how quickly they must run out!"
