Maryam: (93) "There is no one..."

{من} (man) is a relative pronoun (mawsūfah) because it occurs after kull (every), which is indefinite, just as it occurs after rubba in the verse: “Many a person (rubba man) whose chest I have scorched with rage.”

Ibn Mas‘ūd and Abū Ḥaywah read it as (āti al-Raḥmān), according to its original form before the genitive construction (iḍāfah).

{الإحصاء} (al-iḥṣā’ - Enumeration): It means restriction and precision; that is, He has enumerated them with His knowledge and encompassed them.

{وعدهم عدا} (wa-‘addahum ‘addā - And He has counted them one by one): Those who believed that the angels, ‘Īsā, and ‘Uzayr were the children of God were caught between two forms of disbelief:

  1. The claim that it is possible for the Most Merciful to be a parent.
  2. Associating those whom they claimed to be children of God with Him in worship, just as people serve the children of kings as they serve their fathers.

God demolished the first form of disbelief in the preceding verses, then followed it by demolishing the second. The meaning is: There is no one worshipped by them in the heavens or the earth—neither from the angels nor from mankind—except that he will come to the Most Merciful, meaning: he will seek refuge in Him and turn to His Lordship as a servant, submissive, obedient, humble, fearful, and hopeful, just as servants do and as is required of them. He does not claim for himself what these misguided people claim for him.

Similar to this is the Almighty’s saying: “Those whom they invoke seek a means of access to their Lord, [striving] as to which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment” (Al-Isrā’: 57).

All of them are subject to His dominion, subdued by His power. He is the Guardian over them, encompassing them, bearing their affairs, their details, their qualities, and their quantities. Nothing of their states escapes Him. Each one of them will come to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone; none of these polytheists will be with them, and they will be innocent of them.

{إن الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصالحات سيجعل لهم الرحمان ودا} (Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.)
