Verse range: 2:161-162
"Indeed, those who disbelieve..."
This refers to those among the concealers [of the truth] who died without repenting. He mentioned their being cursed while alive, and now he mentions their being cursed while dead.
Al-Hasan read wa-l-malāʾikatu wa-n-nāsu ajmaʿūn (and the angels and the people all together) in the nominative case (rafʿ). This is a conjunction referring to the position of the name of Allah, because it is the agent (fāʿil) in the underlying structure. It is like saying, "I was amazed by the striking of Zayd and ʿAmr," meaning "I was amazed that Zayd and ʿAmr struck." It is as if it were said: "Upon them is that Allah, the angels, and the people curse them."
If you ask: What is the meaning of His saying, "and the people all together," when among the people are both the Muslim and the disbeliever?
I say: He meant by "the people" those whose curse is considered, and they are the believers. It is also said that on the Day of Resurrection, they will curse one another.
"Abiding eternally therein..."
In the curse. It is also said: in the Fire. However, it [the Fire] was omitted to emphasize its gravity and to inspire terror.
"And they will not be reprieved..."
From al-inẓār (granting a delay), meaning they will not be given respite or postponed. Or, they will not be waited for so that they may offer excuses. Or, they will not be looked upon with a look of mercy.
