Open in Qurani

Al-Baqarah: 188

"And do not consume your wealth among yourselves..."

"And let not some of you consume the wealth of others"

"By falsehood" By a means that God has not permitted and has not legislated.

"And do not cast it" Do not present its matter and the litigation regarding it to the judges.

"In order to consume" Through litigation.

"A portion" A group.

"Of the wealth of the people in sin" By way of false testimony, a lying oath, or a settlement while knowing that the one in whose favor the judgment is made is an oppressor.

It is narrated from the Prophet (ﷺ) that he said to two disputants: "I am only a human being, and you bring your disputes to me. It may be that one of you is more eloquent in his argument than the other, so I judge in his favor according to what I hear from him. Whoever I judge in favor of, granting him any of his brother's right, let him not take any of it, for I am only cutting out for him a piece of Hellfire."

Both men wept, and each said, "My right is for my companion." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Go, seek the truth, draw lots, and then let each of you absolve the other."

It is also said regarding "And do not cast it": Do not present some of it to corrupt judges by way of bribery.

Grammatical note: "Tudlu" (cast) is jussive, falling under the scope of the prohibition, or it is in the accusative case due to an implied "an" (that), similar to the verse: "And do not conceal the truth" (Al-Baqarah: 42).

"While you know" That you are in the wrong. Committing a sin while knowing its ugliness is even uglier, and the one who does so is more deserving of rebuke.
