"And for the divorced women, a provision [is due] according to what is reasonable..."

"And for the divorced women, a provision..." The ruling is generalized to all divorced women by mandating the mut'ah (provision) for them, after having previously mandated it for only one specific type: the woman who has not yet been consummated with.

"...a duty upon the righteous." Just as He said there: "...a duty upon the doers of good."

  • Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Abu al-'Aliyah, and al-Zuhri held that it is mandatory for every divorced woman.
  • It has been said: The term "provision" encompasses both the mandatory and the recommended forms of support.
  • It has also been said: The intended meaning of "provision" here is the maintenance (nafaqah) during the waiting period ('iddah).

"Have you not considered those who left their homes in the thousands, fearing death? Allah said to them, 'Die,' then He restored them to life. Indeed, Allah is full of bounty to the people, but most of the people do not show gratitude. And fight in the cause of Allah and know that Allah is Hearing and Knowing." (243–244)
