Open in Qurani

Al-Baqarah: 268

"Satan promises you poverty..."

Meaning: He promises you poverty in [the act of] spending. He tells you that the consequence of your spending will be that you become poor.

Note: It is recited as "al-faqr" (with a sukun on the qaf), and "al-fuqr" (with a damma on the fa), and "al-faqar" (with two fathas). The term "promise" (wa'd) is used for both good and evil, as Allah the Almighty says: "The Fire, Allah has promised it to those who disbelieve" (Al-Hajj: 72).

"...and commands you to commit indecency."

He incites you toward stinginess and withholding charity, with the incitement of a commander to the commanded. In the language of the Arabs, the "indecent" (al-fahish) is the stingy person.

"And Allah promises you..."

In [the act of] spending:

"...forgiveness..."

For your sins, and an expiation for them.

"...and bounty..."

That He will compensate you with something better than what you spent, or a reward for it in the Hereafter.

"He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding." (Al-Baqarah: 269)
