Surah Al-Baqarah 2:285

ﲇ ﲈ ﲉ ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ ﲤ

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."

"And the believers"

If it is a conjunction linked to "the Messenger," then the pronoun in "each" (in the phrase "each believed") refers back to both the Messenger and the believers. That is, all of them believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers from among those mentioned. A pause is made here.

If it is an inchoative (subject of a new sentence), then the pronoun refers to the believers. The pronoun in "each" is singular, signifying that "each one of them believed." It would have been permissible to use the plural, as in His saying: "And all of them shall come to Him, humbled" (An-Naml: 87).

Ibn Abbas recited: "And His Book" (singular), meaning the Quran or the generic category. It is also narrated from him that "the Book" is more inclusive than "the books." If you ask: "How can the singular be more inclusive than the plural?" I say: Because when the singular is intended to denote the genus, and the generic quality exists in every individual of that genus, nothing is excluded from it. As for the plural, it only encompasses what falls under that genus from among the pluralities.

"We make no distinction"

They say: "We make no distinction." Abu ‘Amr recited it as yufarriqu (in the third person, "they make no distinction") on the basis that the verb applies to everyone. ‘Abdullah (Ibn Mas‘ud) recited it as la yufarriquna (they make no distinction).

"Between any"

It carries the meaning of a plural, as in His saying: "And there is not one of you who could withhold Us from him" (Al-Haqqah: 47). That is why the preposition "between" (bayna) is used with it.

"We hear"

Meaning: We have responded.

"Your forgiveness"

It is in the accusative case due to an implied verb. It is said: "Your forgiveness, not Your ingratitude," meaning: We seek Your forgiveness and we do not deny Your favors. It was also recited as wa kutubihi wa rusulihi (with a sukūn on the letters).


"Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have [the consequence of] what it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no strength to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." (286)
