So high [above all] is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, [O Muhammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur'an before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."

Ṭāhā: 114

{فَتَعَالَى اللَّهُ الْمَلِكُ الْحَقُّ} Exaltation of Him, and of that which He directs upon His servants—His commands, His prohibitions, His promises, His threats, the administration of His rewards and punishments according to their deeds, and all else that pertains to the affairs of His dominion.

{وَلَا تَعْجَلْ بِالْقُرْآنِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يُقْضَىٰ إِلَيْكَ وَحْيُهُ} When He mentioned the Qur’an and its revelation, He said, by way of digression: When Gabriel dictates to you what is revealed to you of the Qur’an, wait until he has finished making you hear and understand it. Then, apply yourself to memorizing it thereafter. Do not let your recitation keep pace with his. Similar to this is His saying: {Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it} (al-Qiyāmah: 16). It is also said: Do not convey what is general of it until the clarification comes to you. It has been recited: {until its revelation is completed to you}.

{وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا} His saying, {My Lord, increase me in knowledge}, contains humility before Allah—Exalted is He—and gratitude to Him for the instruction in the order of learning. That is: You have taught me, O Lord, a subtlety in the matter of learning and a beautiful etiquette I did not possess. So, increase me in knowledge upon knowledge, for in everything You have wisdom and knowledge. It is said: Allah did not command His Messenger to seek an increase in anything except knowledge.

{وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَا إِلَىٰ آدَمَ مِن قَبْلُ فَنَسِيَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُ عَزْمًا}
