Surah Ta-Ha 20:117

ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ

So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.

Ṭāhā: 117

{فَلَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا} "Then let him not drive you both out": That is, let him not be a cause for your expulsion.

The act of "misery" (al-shaqāʾ) is attributed to Adam alone, excluding Eve, despite their shared expulsion. This is because the misery of the man—who is the guardian and leader of his household—inherently includes their misery, just as his prosperity includes their prosperity. Thus, the speech is abbreviated by attributing it to him rather than her, while also preserving the rhythmic ending of the verse (the fāṣilah).

Alternatively, "misery" may refer to the toil in seeking sustenance, which is a burden placed upon the man and pertains specifically to him.

It is narrated that a red ox was sent down to Adam, with which he would plow, wiping the sweat from his brow.
