Tafsir of Ta-Ha 20:46

{I am with you both} meaning: your Protector and your Helper.

{I hear and I see} what transpires between you and him, in terms of speech and action. I will act according to what My protection and support for you necessitate. It is possible that He implies [that He hears and sees] your words and actions, and it is possible that He implies nothing [specific], as if it were said: "I am your Protector and Helper, Hearing and Seeing." When the Protector and Helper is such, protection is perfected, support is validated, and concern for the enemy vanishes.

The Children of Israel were under the dominion of Pharaoh and the Copts, who tormented them by imposing difficult tasks: digging, building, transporting stones, and forced labor in everything, along with the killing of male children and the enslavement of women.

{We have come to you with a sign from your Lord} This sentence follows the first sentence, {We are the messengers of your Lord}, as an explanation and clarification, because the claim of messengership is not established except by its proof, which is the bringing of the sign.

He used the singular {a sign} in His saying: {So send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord, and peace be upon whoever follows the guidance}, and did not use the dual, even though he had two signs, because the intent in this context is to establish the claim with its proof. It is as if he said: "We have come to you with a miracle, a proof, and an argument for what we have claimed of messengership." Likewise: {I have come to you with a clear proof from your Lord} (Al-A'raf: 105), {You are but a human like us, so bring...} (Ash-Shu'ara: 154), {...or if I brought you something clear} (Ash-Shu'ara: 30).

{And peace be upon whoever follows the guidance} He means: the peace of the angels, who are the keepers of Paradise, upon the guided, and the rebuke of the keepers of Hell and the punishment upon the deniers.

{He said, "Then who is the Lord of you two, O Moses?" * He said, "Our Lord is He who gave everything its creation, then guided [it]."}
