Taha: 61

{Do not fabricate a lie against Allah} Meaning: Do not call His signs and miracles "magic."

{So He will destroy you (fayasḥatakum)}

  • Al-saḥt (destruction/extirpation) is the dialect of the people of the Hijaz.
  • Al-isḥāt (the act of destroying) is the dialect of the people of Najd and the Banu Tamim.
  • From this is the saying of al-Farazdaq:

    "...except for one destroyed (musḥatan) or one whose skin is peeled off." (This is a line in which the riders continue to clash regarding the parsing of its grammar.)

Taha: 62–64

{So they disputed their affair among themselves, and kept their counsel secret. They said, "Indeed, these two are surely magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your exemplary way. So resolve upon your plot, then come in a row; and he who overcomes today will have succeeded."}
