Surah Ta-Ha 20:92

ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ

[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,

"He said, 'O Hārūn...'"

The "lā" (in mā manaʿaka) is an extra particle (for emphasis). The meaning is: What prevented you from following me in showing anger for the sake of God and in the severity of your rebuke against disbelief and disobedience? Why did you not fight those who disbelieved after they had believed? Why did you not take charge of the matter yourself as I would have done had I been present? Or, why did you not follow me (to join me)?


"He said, 'O son of my mother, do not seize me by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, "You have caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe my word."'"
