Tafsir of Al-Anbiya' 21:108

"Say, 'It is only revealed to me...'"

Innama (إنما) is used to restrict a judgment to a thing, or a thing to a judgment. For example: "Zayd is only standing" (Innama Zaydun qa'im) or "Only Zayd stands" (Innama yaqumu Zayd).

Both examples are combined in this verse:

1. "It is only revealed to me" (Innama yuha ilayya)—with its subject—is like the example: "Only Zayd stands."
2. "That your God is one God" (Annama ilahukum ilahun wahid) is like the example: "Zayd is only standing."

The benefit of combining them is to indicate that the revelation to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is restricted to the exclusivity of Allah’s Oneness.

In His saying, "Will you then be Muslims?" (Fahal antum muslimun), it implies that revelation arriving in this manner necessitates that you dedicate your monotheism purely to Allah and cast off all rivals. It also indicates that the attribute of Oneness can be established through auditory evidence (revelation).

It is also possible that the meaning is: "That which is revealed to me," in which case ma (ما) is a relative pronoun (mawṣūlah).

"But if they turn away, say, 'I have announced to you all alike. And I do not know if what you are promised is near or far. Indeed, He knows what is spoken openly and He knows what you conceal. And I do not know; perhaps it is a trial for you and an enjoyment for a time.'"
