Tafsir of Al-Anbiya' 21:44

Surah Al-Anbiya' 21:44

But, [on the contrary], We have provided good things for these [disbelievers] and their fathers until life was prolonged for them. Then do they not see that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? So it is they who will overcome?

Al-Anbiya: 44

"Nay, We gave these [people] and their fathers enjoyment..."

Then He said: Nay, the protection and guardianship they are in is only from Us, not from any protector who prevents them from Our destruction. We did not protect them and their past fathers except by granting them enjoyment of the worldly life and granting them respite, just as We granted enjoyment to other disbelievers and granted them respite, "until the time grew long for them" and the days of ease and tranquility extended for them.

They thought they would remain in that state, never to be overcome, and that the garment of their security and enjoyment would never be stripped from them. That is a vain hope and a false duration.

"Do they not see that We..." diminish the land of disbelief and the abode of war, and prune its edges by empowering the Muslims over it, manifesting them over its people, and turning it into an abode of Islam?

If you ask: What is the benefit in His saying: "We come to the land"? I say: It contains a depiction of what God was causing to happen at the hands of the Muslims; that their armies and expeditions were raiding the land of the polytheists and coming upon it, overcoming it, and diminishing it from its edges.

"Say, 'I only warn you by revelation.' But the deaf will not hear the call when they are warned. And if a breath of the punishment of your Lord should touch them, they will surely say, 'O woe to us! Indeed, we were wrongdoers.'"
