Al-Anbiya: 48

"And We certainly gave Moses..."

Meaning: We gave both of them [Moses and Aaron] the Furqan (the Criterion), which is the Torah. We brought it as a Diya' (illumination) and a Dhikr (reminder) for the God-fearing.

The meaning is: It is, in itself, an illumination and a reminder. Or, We gave them—through what it contains of laws and exhortations—illumination and a reminder.

  • Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): Al-Furqan means "the victory," as in His saying: "The day of the Criterion" (Al-Anfal: 41).
  • Al-Dahhak: It means the parting of the sea.
  • Muhammad ibn Ka'b: It means the exit from doubts.

Note on recitation: Ibn Abbas recited Diya' without the conjunction wa (and), making it a state (hal) of the Furqan.

  • The Reminder (Al-Dhikr): It is the exhortation, or the mention of what they need regarding their religion and their interests, or it is honor.

{Those who fear their Lord unseen, and they are of the Hour apprehensive.}
