{Before} Before those who were mentioned [previously].

{And Noah, when he called out...} It is [the root] naṣara (to help), the reflexive form of which is intaṣara (to seek help/avenge). I heard a Hudhayli [tribesman] invoking against a thief: "O Allah, unṣurhum minhu (help them against him)," meaning: "Make them victorious over him."

{The great distress} The Flood, and the denial he endured from his people.

{And David and Solomon, when they judged concerning the field, when the sheep of the people strayed therein by night; and We were witnesses to their judgment. And We gave understanding of it to Solomon, and to each [of them] We gave judgment and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains to exalt [Us] with David, and the birds; and We were the doers. And We taught him the making of coats of mail for you, to protect you from your [own] violence. So will you be grateful?}
