"Indeed, this, your religion, is one religion..."

The Religion (al-umma): It means the creed (al-milla). "This" (hādhihi) is a reference to the religion of Islam. That is: The religion of Islam is your religion, which you must adhere to without deviating from it. It is referred to as a single, unified religion, not one that is divided.

"And I am your Lord, so worship Me."

  • Al-Hasan read ummatukum (your religion) in the accusative case (naṣb) as an appositive (badal) to "this" (hādhihi), and he read ummatun (a religion) in the nominative case (rafʿ) as the predicate (khabar).
  • According to another narration from him, he read both in the nominative case as two predicates for "this."
  • Alternatively, he intended the second to be an initial (mubtadaʾ). The address is directed to all of mankind.

"But they broke their affair among themselves; all to Us will return."
