Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.
Tafsir
Verse range: 22:37
"It is not their meat that reaches Allah, nor their blood..."
That is: The meat given in charity and the blood shed during sacrifice will not attain the pleasure of Allah. The intended meaning refers to the owners of the meat and blood. The sense is: Those who offer sacrifices and draw near to their Lord will not be accepted except by observing intention, sincerity, and maintaining the conditions of piety in the lawfulness of what is offered, along with other legal safeguards and commands of godliness. If they do not observe this, the sacrifice and offering will not avail them, even if they are abundant. It has been recited: "Lan tanala Allah" (It will not attain Allah) and "Walakin tanaluhu" (But it attains Him), with both the ta and the ya. It is said that the people of the Pre-Islamic era, when they slaughtered sacrificial animals, would sprinkle the blood around the Kaaba and smear it with blood. When the Muslims performed Hajj, they wanted to do the same, so this verse was revealed.
He repeated the reminder of the blessing of subjugation, then said: "That you may magnify Allah for having guided you"—meaning, to thank Allah for guiding you to the landmarks of His religion and the rites of His Hajj by magnifying Him and declaring His oneness. He abbreviated the speech by including the meaning of gratitude within the magnification, and gave it the same transitive force.
"Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful."
