Al-Hajj: (42) "And if they deny you, then..."

[Exegesis] He says to His Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, as a consolation to him: You are not alone in being denied, for the messengers before you were denied by their peoples, and they are sufficient for you as an example.

[Question] If you ask: Why was it said, "And Moses was denied," and it was not said, "the people of Moses"?

[Answer] I say: Because Moses was not denied by his own people, the Children of Israel; rather, he was denied by those other than his people, namely the Copts. There is also another point: it is as if, after mentioning the denial of every people toward their messenger, it is said: "And Moses was also denied, despite the clarity of his signs and the greatness of his miracles, so what do you think of others?"

The Indefinite (al-tankīr) It carries the meaning of negation and alteration, as He replaced their blessing with an ordeal, their life with destruction, and their prosperity with ruin.

{And how many a city have We destroyed while it was committing wrong, so it is [now] fallen into ruin - and [how many] an abandoned well and [how many] a lofty palace.}
