[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.

Al-Hajj: 53

{Those in whose hearts is a disease} The hypocrites and the doubters.

{And those whose hearts are hardened} The polytheists who deny the truth.

{And indeed, the wrongdoers} He means: these hypocrites and polytheists. The original phrasing would have been "and indeed they," but the explicit noun was used in place of the pronoun to pass judgment upon them for their wrongdoing.

{That it is the truth from your Lord} Meaning: so that they may know that allowing Satan to cast [his suggestions] is the truth from your Lord, and it is wisdom.

{And so that those who have been given knowledge may know that it is the truth} [This means] that they should interpret what is ambiguous in the religion through correct exegesis, and seek for its problematic aspects the interpretation required by the fundamental principles, the decisive texts, and the established rules, so that confusion does not overtake them, doubt does not afflict them, and their feet do not slip.

It is also recited: (La-hādin alladhīna āmanū)—"Indeed, He is the Guide of those who believe"—with tanwīn.

{And those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes to them suddenly or there comes to them the punishment of a barren day.}
