Tafsir of Al-Hajj 22:55

"And those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it..."

The pronoun in {in doubt of it} refers to the Qur’an or the Messenger, peace be upon him.

"The Barren Day" (Yawm ‘Aqim): It is the Day of Badr. The day of war is described as "barren" because:

• The sons of women are killed in it, leaving them as if they were barren and had never given birth.
• Or, because combatants are called "sons of war," so when they are killed, the day of war is described as "barren" metaphorically.
• It is said: It is a day in which there is no good. Just as a "barren wind" (rih ‘aqim) is one that brings no rain and does not pollinate trees.
• It is said: It is a day without equal in the magnitude of its affair, due to the fighting of the angels, peace be upon them, therein.

Al-Dahhak narrated that it is the Day of Resurrection, and that "the Hour" refers to its precursors. It is permissible that "the Hour" and "the barren day" both refer to the Day of Resurrection; as if it were said: "Until the Hour comes to them, or its punishment comes to them," so "the barren day" was placed in the position of the pronoun.

{Sovereignty on that Day is for Allah; He will judge between them. So those who believed and did righteous deeds will be in the Gardens of Pleasure. And those who disbelieved and denied Our signs, for them is a humiliating punishment.}
