But those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly or there comes to them the punishment of a barren Day.

Tafsir

"And those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it..."
The pronoun in {in doubt of it} refers to the Qur’an or the Messenger, peace be upon him.
"The Barren Day" (Yawm ‘Aqim): It is the Day of Badr. The day of war is described as "barren" because:
Al-Dahhak narrated that it is the Day of Resurrection, and that "the Hour" refers to its precursors. It is permissible that "the Hour" and "the barren day" both refer to the Day of Resurrection; as if it were said: "Until the Hour comes to them, or its punishment comes to them," so "the barren day" was placed in the position of the pronoun.
{Sovereignty on that Day is for Allah; He will judge between them. So those who believed and did righteous deeds will be in the Gardens of Pleasure. And those who disbelieved and denied Our signs, for them is a humiliating punishment.}
