"So when the Trumpet is blown..."

  • Al-Ṣūr (The Trumpet): Read with a fatḥah on the wāw by al-Ḥasan. Read with both kasrah and fatḥah by Abū Razīn. This serves as evidence for those who interpret al-ṣūr as the plural of ṣūrah (form/image).
  • The Negation of Lineage: It is possible that the severance of ties occurs among them as they are separated—some being punished and others rewarded. Connection and affinity between them will not exist except through deeds; thus, lineages are rendered void and nullified. Lineage will not be relied upon because the sympathy and mercy between relatives will vanish, as a man shall flee from his brother, his mother, his father, his spouse, and his children.
  • Regarding Ibn Masʿūd: He read it as lā yusā’alūn (they will not ask one another), by assimilating the tā’ into the sīn.
  • If you ask: Does this not contradict verses such as: "And no close friend will ask a friend" (al-Maʿārij: 10), as well as: "And they will approach one another, questioning" (al-Ṣāffāt: 27) and "They will recognize one another among themselves" (Yūnus: 45)? How can these be reconciled?
  • I say: There are two answers:
    1. The Day of Resurrection lasts fifty thousand years, containing various times and states. They will question and recognize one another in some, while in others, they will be oblivious due to the intensity of the terror and panic.
    2. The denial and lack of recognition occur at the first blast of the Trumpet. When the second blast occurs, they will rise, recognize one another, and question one another.

"Then those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds]—it is they who are the successful. But those whose scales are light—those are the ones who have lost their souls, in Hell abiding eternally. The Fire will sear their faces, and they therein will be grimacing."
