{غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا} It means "it possessed us," derived from your saying: "So-and-so overcame me regarding such-and-such," when he takes it from you and possesses it.

{وَالشَّقَاوَةُ} It is the evil outcome that God knew they would deserve due to their evil deeds. It is read as *shaqwatuna* and *shaqawatuna*, with both the *fatha* and *kasra* on the *shin*.

{اخْسَئُوا فِيهَا} Be humiliated therein and driven away, just as dogs are driven away when they are rebuked. It is said: "He drove the dog away" (*khasa’a al-kalb*) and "The dog was driven away" (*khasa’a binafsihi*).

{وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ} Regarding the lifting of the punishment, for it shall neither be lifted nor lightened. It is said: This is the last speech they will utter; after this, there will be no speech except for gasping, sighing, and howling like the howling of dogs—they will neither understand nor be understood.

Regarding the six pleas Ibn Abbas narrated that they have six pleas: 1. Upon entering the Fire, they say for a thousand years: **"Our Lord, we have seen and heard"** (32:12). They are answered: **"The word from Me has been fulfilled"** (32:13). 2. They call out for a thousand years: **"Our Lord, You have made us die twice"** (40:11). They are answered: **"That is because, when God was called upon alone, you disbelieved"** (40:12). 3. They call out for a thousand years: **"And they will call, 'O Malik, let your Lord put an end to us!'"** (43:77). They are answered: **"Indeed, you will remain"** (43:77). 4. They call out for a thousand years: **"Our Lord, delay us"** (14:44). They are answered: **"Had you not sworn before..."** (14:44). 5. They call out for a thousand years: **"Our Lord, bring us out; we will do righteousness"** (35:37). They are answered: **"Did We not grant you life enough...?"** (35:37). 6. They call out: **"My Lord, send me back"** (23:99). They are answered: **"Be driven away therein"** (23:108).

{إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِي يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ * فَاتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا حَتَّىٰ أَنسَوْكُمْ ذِكْرِي وَكُنتُم مِّنْهُمْ تَضْحَكُونَ * إِنِّي جَزَيْتُهُمُ الْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ}
