Tafsir of Al-Mu'minoon 23:52

"And indeed, this, your religion, is one religion..."

[Linguistic Analysis] It is recited as wa-inna (with a kasra on the alif), functioning as an isti'naf (a new beginning of a sentence).

It is also recited as wa-anna (with a fatha), which can be interpreted in two ways:

1. Meaning "and because" (li-anna).
2. As the mukhaffafa (lightened) form of the thaqila (heavy) anna, in which case ummatukum is in the nominative case (marfu') as its subject.

"But they divided their affair among themselves into sects—each faction rejoicing in what it has."

[Exegesis]

• "But they divided their affair": They fragmented their religion, which was originally one, into various sects and parties.
• "Into sects" (zuburan): This is the plural of zubra, meaning pieces or fragments. It implies they broke the unified path into disparate parts.
• "Each faction rejoicing in what it has": Every group is pleased with the falsehood they possess, believing it to be the truth, and they are content with their own deviation.
