Al-Mu'minun: (68-69) "Have they not pondered the Word..."

{The Word} refers to the Qur’an. It means: Have they not pondered it so that they might know it is the clear truth, and thus believe in it and in the one who brought it?

{Or has there come to them that which did not come to their forefathers?} Because of this, they denied it and deemed it strange. This is like His saying: "That you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are unaware" (Ya-Sin: 6).

Or, is it that they turned away from pondering its verses and its stories—such as what befell the deniers before them—out of a sense of security? Or has there come to them a security that did not come to their forefathers, who feared Allah, believed in Him, His Books, and His Messengers, and obeyed Him?

Their forefathers are Ishmael and his descendants from Adnan and Qahtan. It is narrated from the Prophet (ﷺ): (724) "Do not revile Mudar or Rabi'ah, for they were Muslims. Do not revile Quss, for he was a Muslim. Do not revile al-Harith ibn Ka'b, Asad ibn Khuzaymah, or Tamim ibn Murr, for they were upon Islam. And regarding anything you doubt, do not doubt that Tubba' was a Muslim." It is also narrated that Dabba was a Muslim, and he was in the police force of Solomon, son of David.

{Or do they not recognize} Muhammad, the authenticity of his lineage, his place in the nobility of Hashim, his trustworthiness, his truthfulness, his courage, his intellect, and his reputation as the best of the youth of Quraysh? As for the sermon Abu Talib delivered at the marriage of Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, its fame is a sufficient herald.
