Tafsir of Al-Mu'minoon 23:72

"Or do you ask them for a kharj (payment)?"

It has been recited as: (kharājan then kharāj), (kharjan then kharaj), and (kharjan then kharāj).

• The Kharj: That which you pay out to an Imam from the zakat of your land, or to any worker from their wages and compensation.
• The Kharāj: It is said that kharj is what you give voluntarily, while kharāj is what you are obligated to pay.

The most accurate view is that kharj is more specific than kharāj, similar to saying: "the kharāj of the village" versus "the kharj of the small plot." An increase in the word's form indicates an increase in its meaning. This is why the recitation of those who read it as "kharjan fa-kharāju rabbika" (a payment, but the payment of your Lord is better) is excellent.

It means: Do you ask them, in exchange for your guiding them, for a small amount of the creation’s giving? For the abundant giving of the Creator is better.

"And indeed, you invite them to a straight path. And indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path."
