And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,

Al-Mu'minun: 97 **"And say: 'My Lord, I seek refuge in You...'"**
"Hamz" (الهمز): To poke or prod. "Hamzat" (الهمزات) is the plural of the singular act of poking. From this root comes the "mihmāz" (spur) used by a horse trainer.
The Meaning: The devils incite people toward disobedience and entice them to commit it, just as a trainer prods beasts to urge them to move. Similar to "hamz" is "azz" (الأز) in the Almighty’s saying: "They incite them with a fierce incitement" (Maryam: 83).
The command is to seek refuge from their proddings using the language of one who is supplicating to his Lord, repeating the call to Him, and seeking refuge from them being present with him at all or hovering around him.
- Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): This refers to the time of reciting the Qur'an.
- Ikrimah: This refers to the time of death (the final agony).
"Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, 'My Lord, send me back, that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.' No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected."
