Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah, who are the liars.

An-Nur: 13 **"Why did they not produce for it..."**

God made the distinction between a truthful accusation and a false one dependent upon the presence or absence of four witnesses. Those who accused Aisha (may God be pleased with her) had no proof for their claim. Thus, the argument was established against them, and they were—"in the sight of God," meaning in His judgment and law—liars.

This is a rebuke and a reprimand for those who heard the slander but did not hasten to refute or deny it. It is an argument against them based on what is manifest and clear in the Law: the obligation to declare the accuser a liar if he lacks proof, and to punish him if he slanders a chaste woman among the women of the Muslims. How much more so, then, when the target is the Mother of the Believers, the truthful woman, daughter of the truthful man, the sanctity of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him), and the beloved of the Beloved of God?

An-Nur: 14-15 **"And had it not been for the grace of God upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, a great punishment would have touched you for that in which you indulged. When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge, and you thought it was insignificant, while with God it is great."**
