Tafsir
Verse range: 24:29
[Exegesis] He makes an exception to the houses that require permission to enter: those that are not inhabited. This includes places like inns (al-fanadiq), caravanserais (al-khanat), hospices (al-rubut), and merchants' shops.
"Benefit" (al-mata') refers to utility, such as seeking shelter from heat and cold, storing baggage and goods, or conducting buying and selling.
[Tradition] It is narrated that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has revealed a verse regarding permission, yet we travel for our trade and stay in these inns; must we not enter them except with permission?" Consequently, this verse was revealed.
It is also said that it refers to ruins (al-kharabat) where people go to relieve themselves. In this context, "benefit" (al-mata') refers to the act of relieving oneself.
{And Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal} This is a warning to those who enter ruins and vacant houses with suspicious intent.
