An-Nur: (52) "And whoever obeys Allah..."

[Qira'at (Readings)] It is read as wa-yattaqihi (and fears Him), with a kasra on the qaf and the ha’, both with and without wasl (connecting the vowel). It is also read with a sukun on the ha’, and with a sukun on the qaf and a kasra on the ha’—likening taqihi to katif (shoulder), thus lightening it, as in the poet’s saying: “Sulayma said: Buy us some flour.”

[Tafsir] Allah has gathered in this verse the causes of success.

Regarding its interpretation, Ibn Abbas said:

  • "And whoever obeys Allah": in His obligatory duties (fara'id).
  • "And His Messenger": in his established practices (sunan).
  • "And fears Allah": regarding the sins he has committed in the past.
  • "And is mindful of Him" (wa-yattaqihi): regarding what is to come in the future.

It is narrated that a certain king asked for a verse that would be sufficient [as a guide], and this verse was recited to him.

(53) "And they swore by Allah their strongest oaths that if you ordered them, they would surely go forth. Say, 'Do not swear; [such] obedience is known. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.'"
