Al-Furqan: (35) "And We certainly gave Moses..."

The Ministry (Wizara): It does not contradict prophethood, for prophets were often sent at the same time and commanded to support one another.

The Meaning: "So they both went to them, and they denied them, so We destroyed them." This is like His saying: "Strike the sea with your staff, and it parted" (Ash-Shu'ara: 63), meaning: "So he struck it, and it parted."

He intended to summarize the story by mentioning its two ends—the beginning and the conclusion—because they are the intended purpose of the entire narrative: namely, establishing the proof through the sending of messengers, and the deserving of destruction through their denial.

  • From Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "So We destroyed them" (fadammartuhum).
  • Also from him: "So they both destroyed them" (fadammarahuma).
  • A reading: "So We destroyed them" (fadammarannahum), with the emphatic nun (the heavy nun).

(37) "And the people of Noah, when they denied the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them a sign for the people. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment."
