And those who disbelieve say, "This [Qur'an] is not except a falsehood he invented, and another people assisted him in it." But they have committed an injustice and a lie.

Al-Furqān: (4) "And those who disbelieved said..."

{Another people} It is said: They are the Jews. It is also said: They are Addās, the freedman of Huwayṭib ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā; Yasār, the freedman of al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḥaḍramī; and Abū Fukayhah the Roman. Al-Naḍr ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Dār said this.

{Have helped him} "Jāʾa" (to come) and "atā" (to bring/come) are used in the sense of "faʿala" (to do), so they take the same transitive objects. It may also be in the sense of "they have arrived at [a state of] injustice," just as you say, "I came to the place." It is also permissible that the preposition is omitted and the verb is connected directly.

Their injustice: It is that they claimed an Arab was learning from a non-Arab Roman, [receiving] Arabic speech that rendered all the eloquent ones of the Arabs incapable through its eloquence.

The falsehood (al-zūr): It is that they slandered him by attributing to him that of which he is innocent.

(5) "And they said, 'Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, so they are dictated to him morning and evening.'"
