Al-Furqan: (6) Say, "It has been revealed by Him..."

"Who knows every secret in the heavens and the earth" He knows every hidden secret in the heavens and the earth. Among these secrets is the plotting you conceal against His Messenger (peace be upon him), despite your knowledge that what you say is falsehood and fabrication. Likewise, He knows the inner reality of the Messenger’s affairs and his innocence from the slander you cast upon him. He will recompense you and him based on what He knows of you and what He knows of him.

If you ask: How does His saying, "Indeed, He is Ever-Forgiving, Merciful," correspond to this meaning?

I say: Since the preceding passage carries the meaning of a threat, He followed it with what indicates His power to execute it. For one is not described as Forgiving and Merciful unless one is also capable of punishment. Alternatively, it is a reminder that they have deserved, through their stubborn denial, for punishment to be poured upon them, yet He has diverted it from them because He is Forgiving and Merciful: He grants respite and does not hasten [the punishment].

(7) And they said, "What is this messenger that eats food and walks in the markets? Why was an angel not sent down to him so he could be a warner with him? Or why is a treasure not presented to him, or why does he not have a garden from which he eats?" And the wrongdoers say, "You follow none but a man bewitched."
