Tafsir of Al-Furqan 25:61

"Burūj" (Zodiacal Signs): These are the stations of the seven wandering planets: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. They are called Burūj—which means high palaces—because they serve these planets just as houses serve their inhabitants. The derivation of Burj comes from tabarruj (displaying/manifesting), due to their prominence.

"Sirāj" (Lamp): This refers to the sun, as in His saying: "And made the sun a lamp" (Nūḥ: 16). It is also recited as surujan (plural: lamps), referring to the sun and the major stars alongside it.

"Qamaran Munīran" (An Illuminating Moon): Al-Ḥasan and al-A‘mash recited it as wa-qamaran munīran. It is a collective term for "moonlit nights" (layla qamrā’), as if He said: "And possessor of an illuminating moon." Because nights become "moonlit" (qamar) through the moon, He attributed the quality to them.

A parallel for the persistence of the ruling of the muḍāf (the possessed) after its omission, and the muḍāf ilayh (the possessor) taking its place, is the saying of Ḥassān:

Baradā splashes with pure, flowing nectar. (He means: the water of Baradā).

It is also not far-fetched that qamar (moon) is synonymous with qamar (moonlight), similar to rushd and rashad (guidance), or ‘arab and ‘arab (the Arabs).

"And it is He who has made the night and the day in succession for whoever desires to remember or desires gratitude."
