Al-Furqān: (64) "And those who spend the night before their Lord..."

"Spending the night" (al-baytūta): The opposite of "spending the day" (al-ẓulūl). It means the night overtakes you, whether you sleep or do not sleep.

It has been said: Whoever recites any portion of the Qur’an in their prayer, even if it is little, has spent the night prostrating and standing.

It has also been said: It refers to the two rak‘ahs after Maghrib and the two rak‘ahs after ‘Isha’. The apparent meaning is that it is a description of them reviving the night, or the majority of it. It is said: "So-and-so spends the day fasting and the night standing [in prayer]."

"And those who say, 'Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever an inseparable torment. Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and a residence.'"
