Al-Shuʿarāʾ: (105) The people of Noah denied...

The People (al-qawm): A feminine noun; its diminutive is quwayma. It is analogous to the saying: {the messengers}. The intended meaning is Noah, peace be upon him.

Their brother: Just as you say, "So-and-so rides beasts and wears garments," while he possesses only one beast and one garment. He is called "their brother" because he was one of them, as in the Arab expression: "O brother of Banū Tamīm," meaning: "O one of them." From this is the verse in the Ḥamāsa:

They do not ask their brother, when they call upon him In times of calamity, for proof of what he says.

He was trustworthy among them, famous for his trustworthiness, just as Muhammad (may God bless him and grant him peace) was among the Quraysh.

And obey me: In my sincere advice to you and in that which I call you to regarding the Truth.

For it: Regarding this matter and what I am engaged in—meaning his calling and his advice.

The meaning of {So fear God and obey me}: Fear God regarding [the necessity of] obeying me. He repeated it to emphasize it to them and establish it in their souls, while attaching each instance to a reason: he made the reason for the first [command] his being trustworthy among them, and in the second, he cut off any [expectation of] greed from them.

{They said: "Shall we believe you, while the lowest of the people follow you?"}
